Stories from a Chicago welding shop

More often than not, you're going to need a piece of stock or scrap metal on the jobsite.

For repairs, you're obviously going to be bringing a similar type of material whether it's tube, angle, or flat stock. For fencing, you'll need to pack some 1/2" or 5/8" solid square bars and extra pieces of channel. Don't forget round stock and pipe.

My recent fav is an easy one to bring along. The ultimate piece of spare steel for onsite welding and repairs is a 3/16" or 1/4" sheet of mild steel. Its low profile makes it fit easily on a truck bed without interfering with your loadout. No matter what the challenge, you can almost always make it work with heavy sheet metal. Why spend $30 (Pre-tariff!) on a 12 inch long piece of 1/4" at Home Depot when you can keep a 2x3 ft sheet of steel in your truck and cut out base plates as needed? Do you always bring a plasma cutter with you? Even better! We can't always bring the right size of angle iron, so having some thick plate to improvise with can save you in a pinch. This doesn't mean fabbing your own channel or square tubing onsite, but an unexpected trip to the warehouse could turn a one day job into a two day affair.

Just don't forget to pack some extra grinding discs.

Happy welding!
